Government/Municipal Law

Clarkson, Walsh & Coulter, P.A., represents and defends a variety of governmental agencies, including state and municipal governments, on a wide range of issues.

We have represented state, county and municipal governments, including school districts, universities, law enforcement agencies, individual law enforcement officers, state agencies and departments, detention facilities, correctional institutions, counties, municipalities, and elected officials.

Our representation of governmental agencies and officers includes civil rights litigation (such as claims brought pursuant to 42 U.S.C. ß 1982), prisoner litigation, and constitutional challenges to statutes and ordinances.

In addition to constitutional claims, we are experienced with cases involving other federal causes of actions against governmental agencies, such as those involving the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

We have defended a number of agencies and officers from all types of claims brought pursuant to the South Carolina Tort Claims Act. Our firm provides legal defense to governmental agencies on legislative and other regulatory matters.

In addition to providing litigation services, we act in an advisory capacity to governmental agencies and local governments on a number of matters, including review of proposed and current legislation. Our goal is not only to assist governmental agencies and officers after litigation has begun, but also to provide advice regarding proposed and pending legislation to avoid lawsuits against these agencies and their employees in the future.
